The Boardroom Review and Dissent

A boardroom review is a procedure that lets a table evaluate its performance in a holistic manner. It helps table members identify weaknesses in their leadership relationships and culture and also aspects of longevity. It also ensures that the members who pay for table membership are equipped to fulfill their duties.

This research field is in development however there are some issues. First, the current empirical evidence provides mixed findings on the way that dissent affects boards and their functioning. Some studies provide positive (Zona 2016,) curvilinear, non-significant, or mixed results. Other studies report negative (Brown Buchholtz And Butts 2019, Heemskerk Heemskerk and Wats, Minichilli, et al. 2012) interactions between dissent as well as the performance of a board’s task.

In addition, the research does not provide a deeper theoretical understanding of what drives the dynamics of discord. Future research should provide an integrated theoretical framework to contextualize this governance phenomenon. This could involve the use of strategies that are based on configuration (Federo & Saz-Carranza, 2018; Schiell, Lewellyn & Yan 2023) in order to help researchers better understand the way in which attributes and processes, as well as their contexts, are essential and sufficient causality.

In the end, some studies employ an esoteric definition of dissent but do not provide precise measurement methods. These studies are therefore prone to measurement errors. Thus, it would be beneficial to continue studies to create more robust and precise dissent measurement methods.
